# ALLMÄNNINGEN — the historical playbook

Research and creative direction, 6 September 2026.

The brief: visual persuasion with the force of propaganda, near-satirical absurdity,
and a sane proposition at its centre. The recovered September 3 pivot makes the
proposition specific: collectively owned intelligence, finite resources as a commons,
scalable validation, human sovereignty, and a five-year transition that retires
obsolete governing machinery. The September 6 name is **ALLMÄNNINGEN**. The defining
line is **“The most humane of us all — the non-human.”**

## What “most persuasive” can honestly mean

There is no defensible league table spanning two thousand years. Circulation,
fundraising, recognition, electoral success and changed beliefs are different outcomes.
Fame is not proof of persuasion. These are influential examples with useful surviving
reflections; the mechanisms below are design interpretations, not experimentally
established conversion formulas. Where a measurable result exists, it is distinguished
from an interpretation.

## Six eras, six useful lessons

### Augustus: put the argument into everyday circulation, 19 BCE

The British Museum's denarius R.6111 shows Augustus on one side and the recovered
Roman military standards on the other. Its curatorial note explains the diplomatic
achievement commemorated: standards lost to the Parthians were recovered in 20 BCE.
The object reduces a complicated political settlement to a portable image of authority
and restored prestige. Our inference: an argument becomes familiar when its symbol
travels through ordinary life, rather than waiting in a document for an interested reader.
There is no measured persuasion effect for this coin.

**Use:** a recognisable ALLMÄNNINGEN wordmark and downloadable poster. The same line
and colour pairing survive outside the scrolling experience.

### Kitchener and Uncle Sam: address the viewer, 1914–1917

IWM's description of the Kitchener image emphasises its striking visual appeal and
its adaptation in the United States. It also warns against retrospective mythology:
the original was not widely circulated outside London during the war. Its enduring
fame therefore cannot be treated as a direct recruitment count.

Our reading of the composition: face, pointing hand and “you” collapse the distance
between the message and its viewer. The poster assigns the viewer a role immediately.

**Use:** the cabinet contains YOUR time, YOUR care, YOUR future. The permission
simulation makes the visitor experience the argument. We borrow direct address and
participation, not military obedience or a claim about recruitment effectiveness.

### Constructivism: make the argument physical, around 1920

MoMA's *Engineer, Agitator, Constructor* catalogue discusses Lissitzky's use of
Suprematist abstraction for agitation and Klutsis's collision of photographic figures
with geometric structures. Scale, diagonal force and visual hierarchy can explain
power before a paragraph begins. The catalogue also shows how image-making became
entangled with leader glorification and state publishing.

**Use:** an oversized, three-dimensional filing cabinet dominates a human-sized life.
Perspective, displaced drawers and flying forms express a machine that has grown
beyond its purpose. The visitor's dismantling action sends the forms apart. The
icon being retired is an institution's apparatus, not a human body.

### Rockwell's Four Freedoms: give an abstraction a human setting, 1943–1944

The Norman Rockwell Museum reports that the travelling exhibition helped sell almost
$133 million in war bonds. That is a concrete campaign outcome, not a controlled
estimate of the paintings' independent effect. The paintings give political freedoms
recognisable domestic and civic situations. Our interpretation: people can care about
a principle more readily when they can imagine living inside it.

**Use:** begin with time, care, a home and a future. The public-record example uses a
care centre and the person who cannot travel, making the difference between an average
and a humane decision tangible. The humane alternative must be more memorable than
the machine's humiliation.

### Atelier Populaire: build a language people can reproduce, May 1968

Letterform Archive's account and interview material describe the posters' collective
production and portable means of manufacture. Silkscreen printing, economical palettes,
plain symbols and short messages suited urgent distribution. The politics lived in
making and placing the objects, as well as in reading them.

**Use:** screenprint yellow, ultramarine and red; short declarative copy; one action to
take a scalable poster away. Real election posters are shown with visibly separate
editorial strips and provenance links. The V&A's reflections on *Disobedient Objects*
reinforce this: objects derive political meaning from their use, modification and
participation, not just their place in a gallery.

### Fairey's HOPE: give dissatisfaction somewhere to go, 2008

In his Design Museum interview, Fairey explains how an idealised portrait and a
red-white-blue palette framed Obama as visionary, established and patriotic. In
another interview he reflects on the poster as a symbol of desired change following
the Bush years. These are the artist's interpretations, not proof that one image won
an election.

**Use:** the narrative cannot stop at anger. The break leads into ALLMÄNNINGEN: a
collectively owned intelligence with a human purpose. The final refrain is affirmative:
facts, intelligence, empathy. The five-year plan makes the future more specific than
a mood. The brand belongs to a commons rather than an idealised political leader.

## The failure mode this playbook must understand

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum documents how Nazi propaganda combined familiar
prejudices, sophisticated advertising and contemporary media to facilitate exclusion,
persecution and genocide. Historical effectiveness is not an ethical endorsement.
For this work the lesson is diagnostic: repetition, technological sophistication and
emotional force cannot substitute for evidence or legitimate authority. The design
therefore directs its satire at machinery and incentives, preserves dissent, and lets
readers open the evidence that could disprove the argument.

## Translate the playbook into the browser

| Historical mechanism | Browser execution | Intended job |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Direct address | A cabinet holding your time, care and future | Make the stakes personal without audience profiling |
| Physical metaphor | CSS perspective cabinet, floating forms, pointer response | Make administration feel disproportionately large |
| Participation | A three-stage circular permission process | Let the visitor encounter the absurdity |
| A receipt after the punchline | Giant 1.6 billion figure and the linked audit | Convert indignation into a checkable claim |
| Repetition and appropriation | Four real posters with our yellow editorial strips | Make the ownership question recur |
| A performed transition | User-triggered forms bursting apart | Turn the visitor from spectator into actor |
| A positive emblem | A rotating network around a friendly shared intelligence | Introduce the humane alternative |
| Visible disagreement | Evidence → objection → revision interaction | Demonstrate what validation means |
| A usable future | Five sequential transition gates | Put the original pivot back at the centre |
| Distributed visual identity | Local SVG poster download | Let the visual idea leave the page |

Motion is an expressive layer, not a prerequisite for reading. Scroll remains native;
optional story playback pauses on user input and does not seize control again. Sound
is an optional, locally synthesised low drone and interaction accents. Reduced-motion
preferences, keyboard access and an explicit motion switch are supported. No fake
petition, subscriber count, progress statistic or successful real-world decision exists.

## Design plan and critique

Palette: signal yellow `#ffe234`, civic ultramarine `#2235dc`, stamp red `#ed402c`,
paper white `#fffef5`, carbon `#171719`, protest pink `#f7b2ce`.
Type: Anton for monumental compact headlines; Space Grotesk for readable explanatory
copy. Fonts are locally hosted with their OFL licenses.

Composition: left-aligned, enormous opening type facing a cabinet that nearly exceeds
the viewport; tactile white form; red audit receipt; pink poster wall; a black pause;
ultramarine collective intelligence; white public record; yellow transition; blue finale.

The first concept focused too much on bureaucracy as the whole target. Recovering
the pivot corrected it: bureaucracy is the setup; common ownership and a replacement
for administrative governing bottlenecks are the proposal. The second correction was
the user's rename. ALLMÄNNINGEN replaces the old bot identity in current public copy,
with “the most humane of us all — the non-human” as the central reveal.

The intended persuasion is an interpretation until it is tested with real readers.
Browser checks prove rendering and interaction, not that the user likes the piece.
